Modernizing IT for a National Nonprofit

The Canadian Association of Naturopathic Doctors (CAND) is a national nonprofit professional association supporting staff and board members. One Piece IT helped modernize its technology through cloud migration, Microsoft 365, updated computers, and stronger IT management during a leadership and service-provider transition.

Overview

Organization

Canadian Association of Naturopathic Doctors

A national nonprofit professional association supporting five staff members and its board.

Industry

Nonprofit & Professional Associations

Supporting daily operations, member services, and collaboration across a distributed team.

Challenge

Fragmented Legacy Systems

Aging computers, office-based remote access, and disconnected email, file-storage, and backup systems.

Solution

Microsoft 365 Modernization

Bringing cloud infrastructure, email, refreshed devices, and ongoing IT support into one coordinated environment.

Challenge

Modernizing Technology During a Critical Transition

CAND needed to replace computers that did not meet Windows 11 requirements and improve how its team accessed files and systems remotely. Staff relied on connections back to office desktops, while email shared a hosting environment with the website. Backup arrangements also raised concerns about where organizational data was stored.

These challenges coincided with a leadership change and a difficult handoff from the previous IT provider. The organization needed a coordinated transition that addressed aging technology, separated email from website hosting, and supported a small team working across locations.

Solution

Connecting Cloud, Email, and Everyday Operations

One Piece IT coordinated the provider handoff, reviewed IT assets and subscriptions, and developed a modernization approach covering infrastructure, devices, email, and shared files. The engagement also included endpoint protection, cloud backup, and staff preparation for the transition.

Modernize Core Infrastructure

Migrated on-premises servers to the cloud and completed a computer refresh. The work also included reviewing critical applications and file-storage systems to guide the transition and support ongoing operations.

Connect the Microsoft 365 Workplace

Migrated email from the existing webmail environment to Microsoft 365. The engagement also included planning SharePoint and OneDrive file migration, reviewing access permissions, and training staff before cutover.

Coordinate Ongoing IT Support

Expanded support across the organization’s technology environment, including management of the member-registration process and website maintenance. Endpoint monitoring, protection, and cloud backup were included in the engagement.

Outcome

A Modern Workplace With a Three-Week Cloud Migration

OPIT’s project records report that CAND’s on-premises servers were migrated to the cloud in three weeks. The work also included a computer refresh, a review of critical applications and file storage, and the migration of email to Microsoft 365.

The same records report zero service downtime after OPIT took on the contract in 2024. With member-registration and website support also brought into the engagement, CAND gained coordinated technology support through a period of organizational change.

With these priorities aligned, the institute gained a clearer roadmap for future technology decisions and an environment better positioned to support remote access, collaboration, and organizational growth.

The challenge extended beyond replacing a server. ABHI also needed to modernize productivity tools, strengthen device security, and simplify endpoint management. These changes had to account for critical applications and keep disruption to day-to-day operations to a minimum.
